Six soldiers have since Thursday been killed in battles in southern Afghanistan, NATO said in a statement Friday. Three of them were killed in a firefight with Taliban and three in a aion kinah bomb explosion, said the press release.
The commander of NATO forces in southern Afghanistan, the British Major General Nick Carter, warned Friday against what he called pre-celebration of a military victory in the area. He pointed in particular to problems in capturing the city Marjah from the Taliban.
It may take several weeks before Marjah is admitted, said Carter.
- About three months time we should have it fairly clear to us whether we’ve succeeded or not, but so far there is no reason to triumph, "he said.
The management of the U.S. Department of Defense Pentagon sees, however, lighten the situation. Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Friday that the Taliban now are under hard pressure, and that Americans are satisfied with the development of the offensive in southern Afghanistan.
